What's a portal? A portal is a Web-based application that combines a variety of information and services into one convenient location. Well-known commercial portals include Yahoo! and MSN. Institutional information portals are applications that provide a personalized gateway to useful information, applications and services located both within a University’s Web page and outside of it. For instance, www.umkc.edu is a site that contains thousands of pages of information regarding UMKC. A portal, however, has the ability to combine access to those pages with access to other relevant information found in places like the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce site, the UM System site, the U.S. Department of Education site, and more.
