The mission of the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership is to enhance the performance and effectiveness of individuals and organizations in the nonprofit sector, through high quality community-focused education, applied research, problem solving and service. The Midwest Center is a center for learning, a center for inquiry and dialogue, and a center for the support and renewal of the people and organizations of this vital sector. The center engages the resources and talents of the University and nonprofit organizations to address the challenges and issues facing the nonprofit sector so that nonprofits are better prepared to serve their communities. The center is an education and outreach center of the Cookingham Institute for Public Affairs, in the Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at UMKC. The center is a premier element of UMKC's scholarship of engagement, working in partnership with community and nonprofit leaders to strengthen Kansas City and other communities throughout Missouri, Kansas, and the Heartland states of the U.S. The center accomplishes its mission through: (a) Education and Professional Development (including workshops, seminars, custom training, etc.); (b) Community-Based Applied Research (including practice-oriented reports on management); and (c) Community Facilitation and Problem Solving (including facilitation of community initiatives). Each year, the Midwest Center serves thousands of community leaders from throughout the Midwest through its leadership and management development programs; more than twenty-five thousand people have participated in its programs during the twelve years it has served this community as a part of the land grant mission of the University of Missouri - Kansas City.
