Its most immediate predecessor was the Kansas City Regional History Institute created in 1997. The mission of the Center is to foster scholarly research on regional topics, disseminate that scholarship throughout the community, and integrate those studies into instruction in public and private schools, colleges, and universities. The Center's Fellows will include faculty members from disciplines across the UMKC campus. Participants in the Center work with historical materials in the collections of the Miller Nichols Library, the Western Historical Manuscripts Collection, and other archives in metropolitan Kansas City.
